The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday brings millions of Americans together for a day of national service. Join us locally to keep our community looking good.
Spend your morning with the NAACP Cheltenham Area Branch by teaming up to clean up the exit ramp at Rt. 309 and Paper Mill Road Exit.
This exit is named in honor of the memory of the late Bishop David and Catherine Graham, who were local civil rights legends in Philadelphia and Montgomery Counties. They served our community in many capacities, from marching for equality, planning in the Girard College protest, voter rights initiatives (having had 2 family members lynched in 1959 in South Carolina and feeding the homeless from their own Church based ministries.

Time: 10:00am-12:00pm
Location: Rt. 309 and Paper Mill Road
All cleanup supplies will be provided. Just come dressed for the weather with closed-toed shoes and a filled reusable water bottle.
Minimum age- 16 years.

Why this Project?
MLK Day is about honoring our rich past while also being leaders in improving our
present situations. Bishop Graham always taught that leadership was exemplified
through serving our community, so what a perfect way to reach both of our goals.
Let’s get the exit at Rt. 309 and Paper Mill Road back in tip top condition and keep our
community beautiful.
Every piece of litter picked up counts, and we need your help!
Why Picking Up Litter is Important
1. Keeping it beautiful: Litter is an eyesore, plain and simple. Studies show that litter can negatively impact your sense of community and safety. It shows pride in community and encourages others to do their part, too.
2. Protecting children: Litter can pose health and safety risks, especially to curious children who are more likely to pick items up.
3. Keeping costs down: According to Keep America Beautiful, litter cleanups cost the U.S. $11.5 billion a year, and that figure doesn’t include indirect costs, such as
decreased property values. These costs are shared by our government and by local businesses.
4. Preventing floods: Litter often makes its way to storm drains, where it can cause serious clogs that lead to flooding. Litter that does pass through the storm drain flows directly into nearby rivers and streams, polluting our waterways.
5. Protecting wildlife: Litter poses a threat to local wildlife when they confuse it for food
or nesting materials.
